The benefits of Reflexology

Reflexology is an ancient, drug-free and natural therapy widely practiced around the world that brings relief to people suffering from a whole array of conditions. It is often used by people who prefer to take a holistic approach to health and well being and can be used alongside most other complementary or medical approaches.

What is reflexology?
In essence, reflexology is a holistic therapy that can help relieve the symptoms of a range of conditions including:

  • Tension related headaches, migraine, shoulder and back pain
  • Digestive upsets such as bloating and IBS or to support detoxification
  • Insomnia and other forms of disturbed sleep
  • Reproductive issues, especially where stress has been identified as a factor
  • Irregular periods or PMS
  • Pregnancy related conditions such as fluid retention, aches and pains and digestive upsets
  • Helping to manage the physical and emotional effects of stress, anxiety, worry and depression
  • Providing support through periods of trauma or grief
  • Impaired memory, difficulties with thinking, concentration or attention span
  • Poor immunity, low energy levels and jet lag
  • And to support recovery from serious illness or surgery

How does it work?
Reflexology helps you go into a state of deeply restorative relaxation. This invokes the parasympathetic nervous system which slows your heart rate, encourages greater blood flow, releases muscle tension and helps to calm your mind. Being in this relaxed state enables all the systems in your body to start working more effectively, prompting your body’s own healing processes, restoring inner balance, replenishing energy levels and providing relief from a range of symptoms.

What does it feel like?
The treatment is delivered in a calm, restful environment and usually performed on the feet, though it can also be delivered on the hands or face. Each therapist will have their own style but I use a gentle, flowing pressure which is not painful and allows you to unwind and drift off into a pleasantly relaxed state.  And no, it doesn't tickle…

What does holistic mean?
Taking a holistic approach means that I am interested in understanding you as a whole person, not just a set of symptoms. In practical terms this means that in our first session I will spend some time understanding your medical history, diet and life-style and that in each treatment session I will give you tips, recommendations and referrals that I believe will help you continue the healing work we have started in the session. Clients being treated by a therapist using a holistic approach often find they can identify patterns and triggers for their symptoms that weren’t previously apparent which then enables them to minimise or eliminate the problem at its root cause.

Not all reflexologists will follow a holistic approach. In particular those who work in a drop-in centre are unlikely to spend much time asking questions about your diet and lifestyle and are more likely to deliver a standard treatment. This is not necessarily a bad thing, especially for a one-off treatment and really depends what you are looking to achieve. See below for my advice on when this might be right for you.

Is it safe for everyone?
Reflexology is a drug-free, non-invasive therapy that works with your body’s own healing processes and is generally believed to be safe for everybody. There are, however, a few conditions or situations in which it is contraindicated to treat including women who are in the first trimester of pregnancy and anyone suffering from a contagious disease. If you are concerned, discuss this with me before you make an appointment.

How many sessions should I have?
Every person’s body is unique and responds to treatment in a different way but as a general guide:

  • A one-off  treatment is perfect for people who just want some time out to relax, restore and rebalance. Book a session if you’ve had a particularly manic week, to help you through a short-term period of anxiety or anytime you feel like some time-out to relax, calm your mind and replenish your body before venturing back out into the world.
  • A series of treatments is more effective from those who do suffer symptoms such as: persistent headaches, digestive problems, hormonal issues, low energy or an inability to get a decent night’s sleep, on an on-going basis. This enables you to experience the cumulative benefits of being in a deeply relaxed, restorative state on a regular basis over time and helps me provide a more holistic service.
  • A series of treaments is best for women looking for conception support or, in relation to pregnancy.
  • Some people also like to use regular reflexology treatments as a preventative health measure and find it useful as a way to manage anxiety or keep their stress levels low so that certain symptoms don't manifest in the first place.

Your first session includes a free, in-depth consultation in which we will explore your specific needs and expectations. This enables me to make a recommedation for the treatment approach I think will serve you best which we can discuss before you decide how you want to proceed.

I undertook a course of reflexology with Tricia and found the overall experience very beneficial to both my physical and mental well- being. I was under stress at the time which I had not fully appreciated and found the focus on areas of my body that were out of balance to be very healing. Along with the gentle approach and the simple, but powerful advice, I shifted to a more significantly relaxed and energised place.

From the moment that I talk to Tricia I already feel that I am in safe hands. Her positivity and knowledge is apparent from the minute you begin speaking, and having a space to talk and be heard is really important in beginning to relax and feel supported.

The treatments I have received from Tricia have been wonderful and each session I have felt softer and slower for a few days afterward. All of the advice and support I have received in my sessions has helped me to shape my life so I focus on my wellbeing and am gently reminded to put myself first. Tricia has knowledge, patience, empathy and a sensitive touch that would bring more balance and harmony to anyone's life.

I went to see Tricia when I was feeling very stressed with the sale of a property, it was going on for such a long time. I felt so much better after the session, so much more relaxed, so much happier and sleeping better too. She helped me feel on tip top form again which made it easier to get things done.

I have also started doing more public speaking recently. Whenever I need to do some public speaking I go for a treatment beforehand because I feel so amazing afterwards. I always perform well after I have seen Tricia - it is so refreshing

I wholeheartedly recommend seeing Tricia – she is amazing at what she does
